Website content optimisation

Clare Bridson

Everyone hopes to have their website rank on page one of google and a good place to start is by making sure the content you post is not only relevant to your audience but it’s also important that the content is legible for search engines.

Here are our tips on how you can write to help your content get noticed AND improve your SEO.

KEYWORD OPTIMISATION

Make sure you research your keywords and include them not only in your article but in your meta descriptions and page titles.

Body Content:

Include your target keyword approximately 3 to 5 times in your articles, pages and blogs.

Title Tag:

Include your target keyword in the title tag as close to the beginning of the title tag as possible and keep the title tag length to under 50 characters if possible.

Meta Description:

Use a unique, descriptive meta description that includes your target keyword. Write your description to fit the space allowed and to encourage potential customers to click though to your website.

H1 Tag:

Make your main heading a lengthier variation of your Title Tag. The H1 Tag is your opportunity to add detail that couldn’t fit in your Title Tag. Try to use your main keyword as close to the beginning of the tag as your can.

URL Slug:

Create your slug that is as short as possible while including the entire main target keyword.

H2, H3, H4 Tags:

It’s good practice to add your main target keyword into one of these in article headings at least once, but only if it sounds natural and unforced.

IMAGES

Don’t forget to optimise your images as well as your text.

Keywords:

Remember to name your images to match your keywords, add Alt Tags and include your keywords in these too. These occurrences of your keywords count towards your total keyword density for the page!

Sizes and dimensions:

Check the sizes of these images BEFORE you upload them. Make sure they are the correct dimensions so they are not stretched and minimise them where you can. Large images will slow the speed of your website and affect the overall performance of your site. There are many free tools you can use to do this.

STRUCTURE, FORMATTING, AND MEDIA

Build your content using the guidelines below to improve readability and decrease bounce rate.

Article Structure:

Structure your article in a way that makes it “skimmable.” Break the piece down. An introduction followed by clear paragraphs and sections using sub heading and bullet points where relevant.

Paragraphs:

Each paragraph should focus on a single thought and be limited to under 5 lines.

Lists:

Both unordered and ordered lists are fantastic ways to present information while also making the article skimmable.

Use your font styles:

Use bold and italic formatting at your discretion to bring attention to specific information that you think would be especially helpful to your audience and attract their attention.

Photos & Video:

Include both pictures and videos in your articles to illustrate your points and help make the content easy to read.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL LINKS

Including links in your article can build trust, improve user experience and make it easier for visitors to navigate around your website.

Hyperlinks:

Include links in your articles to support the source of your information or credit someones work.

External Links:

External links should point to websites that are authorities on the topic in which you’re speaking.

Internal Links:

Internal links should be used to direct visitors to other pages on your website, perhaps contact details, products or further information on a topic being covered. You should only do this if the pages are relevant.

Social Media Links:

You should alway remember to link some of your social media posts back to your website to encourage traffic to your products and articles. It’s a great way to get eyeballs on your website.
